Sugar Spiced Nuts

Sugar Spiced Nuts

I’ve been making these nuts for years and years. They are easy to make, including with kids. They are great to keep on hand but also to give as gifts. I like to package them in canning jars, with a pretty ribbon around the lid and a card giving suggestions for all the ways they can be enjoyed (see those below).

This recipe can easily be doubled, tripled and quadrupled to divvy up for gift-giving. The nuts are delicious on their own or can be broken up and crumbled over cobbler, pie, oatmeal and even ice cream.

Makes 2 cups

Ingredients:
1 egg white, slightly beaten
2 cups nuts (pecan halves, unblanched almonds or walnut halves or any combination)
¼ cup white sugar
2 tsp ground cinnamon
¼ tsp ground nutmeg
¼ tsp ground cloves (or even pumpkin pie spice)

Instructions:
Heat oven to 300 degrees.

Mix egg white and nuts until nuts are thoroughly coated and sticky.

Mix sugar with spices in a separate bowl.

Pour the sugar and spice mixture over the nuts until they are coated.

Spread in a single layer on an ungreased baking sheet (or better yet, a Silpat-lined sheet)

Bake approximately 30 minutes or until toasted.  The nuts will look “foamy” but will feel dry and not sticky.Remove from pan, allow to cool completely. You may need to break them up to separate them.

Note: You could experiment with other spices including Indian ones like Garam Masala or curry or other savory spices. I haven’t done this yet but I bet it’s yummy.
